Mr Cavanagh said he had an interest in home brewing and when the business became available he saw an opportunity to turn a pastime into a profession.
The husband and wife team took over the Russell Street business at the start of May and while Mr Cavanagh concedes they are still finding their feet, they're keen to pick up from where the previous owners left off.
"I just wanted a change from what I was doing previously and this opportunity was there and I thought it was something I had a bit of interest in and can turn it into a wage," he said.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
"We've just taken over from where they left off for now and down the track we'll hopefully get more brands, more variety."
While the Bathurst store doesn't "sell the final product", it stocks all of the ingredients people require to make their own beverages, including but not limited to just beer.
"You can make beer, spirits, sausage stuffing, jerkies, cheese, kombucha, bacon, yoghurt, there's lots," Mr Cavanagh said.
"We just supply anything that anyone needs to do it themselves at home."
The store also supplies a recipe sheet for customers to see what ingredients are needed to make the equivalent of different commercial beers.
With a large number of different flavour options for spirits, jerky and smoked meat, Country Brewer Bathurst tries to cater for all taste buds, and are more than happy to order in new stock.
"If we don't have it, we'll try and get it for you," Mrs Cavanagh said.
Being the couple's first business venture they're learning as they go and haven't made any immediate changes to the store, but they still have a few plans in the works.
"We're looking to eventually runs classes but not just yet," Mrs Cavanagh said.
"Beer making classes, cheese, jerky, smoking meats ... that sort of stuff as well."
