The proposal is to assign Wambuul as a dual name for the geographical features already named Fish River and Macquarie River.
A dual name will sit alongside the non-Aboriginal name, each part having equal status.
Community members can now lodge submissions with the board to provide feedback on the proposed names, including the spelling and extent.
To make a submission, visit proposals.gnb.nsw.gov.au/currentproposals and select the Wambuul proposal.
Respondents will be asked if they support or object to the proposal and why, and what their interest is in it.
They also have the option to upload supporting documentation.
Submissions close on Sunday, July 18.
