After starting the Group 10 season in reserve grade for St Pat's, Coughlan's versatility helped to earn him a promotion to the premier league squad.
He had time out after injuring his hamstring against Mudgee but after scoring the try that helped the Saints end their local derby drought against Bathurst Panthers last Saturday, Coughlan is feeling good.
"It's pretty handy being outside a class player like Jacko [Jackson] Brien, he makes you look pretty good in attack and you just try your best in defence outside him. He's a freak and I think he makes me look a lot better than I actually am," Coughlan laughed.
"Years and years ago I played in a first grade side that beat Panthers, my first year in first grade would've been 2011. But it has been awhile since we've knocked them off, so it did feel pretty good."
Coughlan scored that try with the number five jumper on his back. He's happy to stay on the wing or fill any other role captain-coach Zac Merritt asks him to - he just enjoys being part of a side that's found form.
"I've found this year that my role has been a bit different, I was in the halves but this year with a couple of new players and TC [Tyler Colley] coming back I've been more of a 'Mr Fix It' sort of player," he said.
"We've got a couple of wins now, we knocked off Panthers who are in top spot and probably should've beaten CYMS the week before."
This Sunday the task for Coughlan and his fellow Saints will be to back up that effort against Panthers - it was the first time they'd beaten the men in black since 2015 - with victory over Orange Hawks at Jack Arrow Oval.
Hawks won the first meeting between the pair this season 28-12, but Coughlan is confident the Saints can reverse that result and climb into the top four.
"We've just got to stick to what we do the best, our middle they set the best platform in the Group I reckon. Zac leads and Luke Single has been killing it and we've got no shortage of quality hookers at the moment," he said.
"The boys then play off the back of that, blokes like Lee McClintock and Jackson Brien, so it's a pretty good formula when you put it all together.
"Zac made a big point of we're creating opportunities but we're not taking them, so this week hopefully we can take those opportunities."
Kick-off on Sunday is 2.20pm.
