Ricky's Breath front man and chief lyricist Charlie Dunn has issued a stark warning to greedy, corporate identities as the Bathurst punk quartet prepare to enter brand new territory with upcoming single 'Climax for Change'.
Recorded at The Grove Studios, which has INXS, Silverchair and Courtney Barnett as noteworthy ex-clients, 'Climax for Change' has Dunn, alongside lead guitarist Harry Cooke, bassist Harley Goodman and drummer Darnell Polson, poised to enter the socially-charged sphere like the punk rockers of old.
"'Climax for Change' is about rich, consumerist figures who kill the Earth with their greed and think they're better than everyone else because of their bank balance," Dunn said.
"Some might find this song a bit inflammatory, but going forward, we want to write material that pushes our views on society and the world around us."
Dunn said the band felt right at home recording the track at The Grove Studios, which provided room to foster "a suitable progression for the band's sound."
"We looked into how Nirvana approached tracking guitars to come up with a fuller, punchier sound; for example, Harry and I tracked our guitars five or six times each on the main riff."
"'Climax for Change' is quite different to anything we've ever released; there's three or four distinct parts to the song, so listeners can expect plenty of variety."
"The recording experience at The Grove has been a revelation for us; the creative energy inside that building has pushed us into inspiring new territory."
In such a difficult time for the live music industry, Dunn said the band has stayed united through a shared goal to write as much as possible.
"We just want to gig as much as we can post-COVID, it's easily what we miss the most," he said.
"There's so much material in the works, and we hope to have a new EP out in the near future."
