The brilliant career of jockey Hugh Bowman hit another milestone on Saturday when he claimed his 100th Group 1 win, riding Montefilia to success in The Metropolitan (2,400 metres) at Randwick.
Bowman claimed the win on Montefilia ($6) in exciting fashion when both his runner and Entente ($5 favourite, Tim Clark) hit the line together in a photo finish.
Montefilia narrowly got the nod over Entente, just as she did when running second in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes several weeks earlier.
"Montefilia is a mighty mare, I have had a wonderful association with her,'' Bowman told the Daily Telegraph after his win on Saturday.
"Entente kept kicking back hard but this mare kept fighting hard, she wanted to win so much.''
Bowman, 41, is still hopeful that there's plenty more success to come in his career.
"I've won some wonderful races that haven't made it into that G1 level too. One that is excluded is The Everest so we are going to try and do that this year," he said.
"All in all I've had a wonderful career and hopefully there are still some good years ahead."
It was a satisfying moment for Bowman who had missed out earlier on reaching the 100 mark in the Royal Randwick meeting during the Flight Stakes (Mallory, 10th) and The Epsom (Cascadian, 4th).
The legendary Winx accounts for a quarter of Bowman's Group 1 wins.
Those 25 Group 1 victories remain a world record for a single horse.
Bowman's next-best horses on the list are Samantha Miss and Preferment, who each gave him three wins at the top grade.
Five of his Group 1 wins have come overseas, and include the likes of the Japan Cup and Hong Kong Derby.
He joins an elite club of Group 1 centurions which includes George Moore (126), Damien Oliver (118) and Jim Cassidy (102).
