While Bathurst were not able to field a full strength side for the weekend's round at Dubbo they did come away with a closely fought success against the competition-leading Orange outfit to bring the margin back.
However, Dubbo were able to field a very competitive team on their home court and they brought down a Bathurst side who they've previously struggled to overcome.
Bathurst Tennis Centre's Andrew Mitton said things are heading for an exciting finish.
"We saw some different results from normal. Dubbo fielded a strong team at home and they defeated both us and Orange," he said.
"We defeated Orange, so that leaves us in with a fighting chance for the upcoming last round next month. We'll likely have to win something in the vicinity of 5-0 in both fixtures.
"Orange will only be leading by one win ahead of us now, though considering the countback on sets - should we get level with them - we'd have to win by a significant margin."
Several players stood tall for Bathurst in the latest round.
Matt Stewart was the pick of the bunch, producing success in his singles matches to give Bathurst a great platform to build off.
"The results show that Dubbo have the team to compete, it's just a case of getting a team to travel away together and do the job," Mitton said.
"We still put together a strong side. Matt Stewart and Harry Evans were our singles players. Matt won both while Harry won one and lost one.
"Alex Mitton and Matt Gibson played the one doubles, John Bullock and Michael Olson played the two doubles and James Champion and Chloe Brasier played the three doubles.
"We had Tayla [Brasier] out with HSC exams, Christian Dowling, Red Humphries, Jeorge Collins and myself were all out.
"We haven't fielded what I would consider our strongest team all year but we're still very competitive no matter who we field. We'll be rewarding continued play when putting our team together for the final round."
Bathurst Tennis Centre will play host to the deciding round on December 12.
