There's an amazing story ready to unfold for Red Bull Racing should either of their two entries take the chequered flag in this Sunday's Great Race.
Van Gisbergen, with this year's Supercars title already secured, is looking to end a brilliant season in the best fashion possible by backing up last year's Bathurst success alongside Tander.
Meanwhile, teammate Whincup is seeking to end his full-time Supercars career with a fifth Bathurst triumph, while co-driver Lowndes is hoping to move into outright second on the all-time 1000 winners list.
It's going to take a great endurance effort from one of van Gisbergen's rivals to stop him from taking out this Sunday's race when you consider the pace and consistency he's shown throughout the season - finishing no worse than third at any venue this season.
"Obviously we've got a pretty quick car this year and we have the same combination as last year. We've got as good a chance as anyone but there's some quick cars out there this year," van Gisbergen said.
"We'll make sure that we stay focused on ourselves first, make sure that our own car stays fast, and then we'll see what the others are doing."
Van Gisbergen said it's certain to be a great edition of the 1000 thanks to the spectators.
"With the atmosphere we've had at the races so far it's so good to have them back for Bathurst," he said.
"Last year we really missed that atmosphere with everyone camping and walking around the track every night. I look forward to that."
Van Gisbergen has already enjoyed his share of Bathurst success this year after he claimed both races on offer in February's Mount Panorama 500.
There's going to be plenty of focus also on the #88 Red Bull entry over the weekend as Lowndes looks to take himself within one victory of Peter Brock's nine Bathurst triumphs.
But Lowndes' main motivator this year is to give Whincup the ultimate Supercars farewell present.
"I'm going to support Jamie as best as I can. It's his last full-time drive," he said.
"I know the emotions that he goes through, especially when you drive through the Blue Mountains. When you come into Bathurst and you see Mount Panorama it gives you goosebumps. It's a magical place.
"If there's one place you want to win at each year it's Bathurst, and we've been lucky enough to have our name on that trophy a couple of times."
With the championship still alive heading into the last round at Sydney the battles between van Gisbergen and Whincup were something to behold.
Lowndes said it's been exciting to watch the intense racing between the full-time Red Bull pair but now they have to take a more measured approach for Bathurst.
"The first rule of thumb is beat your teammate and we saw over the last couple of weekends when they were going head-to-head," he said.
"Going into Bathurst you have to be more sensible. It's long a race. You can't win it on the first lap but you can damn well lose it."
