Roxy George's hard work off court is helping her tick off representative goals

While many her age enjoy a good sleep-in, 15-year-old George has been setting her alarm at 5am once a week and the heading off the Lithgow to train.

That's not all she has been doing either.

"I've been waking up at 5am for 6am training sessions in Lithgow, I've been doing that once a week for like 20 weeks," George said.

"I've also had my local training each week as well and then CrossFit to keep my fitness up."

Bathurst Goldminer George made the commitment to work hard in training to put herself in the frame for representative honours.

Though she's had plenty already, that she now finds herself as a bottom-age player in the under 18s bracket means she faces stiffer competition. It means she has been delighted selectors have still noticed her.

As one of the NSW Country players in the State Performance Program, George will join the best young NSW Metro talents for weekly training sessions.

That should help her cause to make the cut to play at the under 18 Australian Country Championships, which will be staged at Ballarat in April.

She has been named in a squad of 20, which will be trimmed following a camp at Maitland at the end of January.

"I've only just gone up to the under 18s age group and I've been selected in a State Performance Program and been chosen in the Country side which is a squad of 20 girls and they'll cut that to a team of 10," she said.

"I was very shocked, but I'm so happy because I've put in a lot of work to make this. I am pretty keen to make that final 10."

George is also hoping to be announced in a D-League squad this week. She was picked to participate in the under 16s tournament this year, but COVID-19 meant the competition did not go ahead.

The D-League was designed by Basketball NSW to help aid the development of talented juniors by having them train, play and coach against each other in a tournament-style environment.

"They pick the top 20 kids from Country and Metro and then they combine them into teams, they pick an under 17s team and under 18s," she said. "I'm hoping to be in the under 18s."

The D-League is set to take place in January and if selected, it will add to George's already busy schedule.

"Our Western Junior League will start up and I'll have some CrossFit comps in there as well, and some basketball camps - so it will be very busy," she said.
