Emergency services personnel, including police divers, have searched the dam extensively since Saturday afternoon when they were alerted to the 42-year-old's disappearance.
The search continued on Tuesday. By the late afternoon a Chifley Police District duty officer could not offer any new information, with the man still unaccounted for.
Chifley Dam is open to the public for swimming and non-motorised watercraft such as kayaks.
No powered boats are allowed to use the dam currently, and the Bathurst Aqua Park has opted to remain closed until further notice.
The missing man had been on a boat with friends at about 1.30pm on Saturday, Christmas Day, when he told them he was going to swim back to shore, a distance of approximately 300 metres.
A storm struck the area a short time later and the man's friends saw him disappear under the water.
He failed to surface.
Police are unable to say at this stage whether or not the missing man is a Bathurst resident.
