Turnbull himself was in the gig on board Smooth Baht ($3 favourite), and looked likely to add to his recent Shirley Turnbull Memorial meeting success when he broke away from the field with 200m.
However, his son Mitch began a big chase down attempt on Firestorm Red ($8.50) as they straightened for home.
He had several lengths to make up on the final straight but Firestorm Red showed plenty of power to pass his stablemate on the outside and take the win by a neck.
Firestorm Red, up until that point, had already put in plenty of work to reach the front from the second row, and for that reason Turnbull wasn't too disappointed to have the runner-up drive.
"I'd done heaps of work already and I just wanted to get as far as I could away from them. I was actually worried about Amanda's [Turnbull] two [Fasika and Sweet Heaven] coming over the top, along with Mitch's fella," Turnbull said.
"I just wanted that break over them but it wasn't enough," he laughed.
"If anyone was going to beat me then I'm glad it was Mitch."
The winning mile rate was 1:55.7, with back-to-back final quarters of 27.9.
Turnbull said with such a high pace it's one of those runner-up results you've got to be happy with.

"They went 55.7 and they thought it was a record for a while, but it only ended up being a tick over the record," he said.
"You couldn't be any happier with him after that when you look at all the work that he'd done."
Josh Turnbull's Bettor Jiggle ($51, Nathan Turnbull) won the scrap for third place, finishing a further 11 metres behind the leading pair and narrowly beating Yarraman Bella ($8, James Sutton).
