Handcock's name was removed at the insistence of the man who ordered his execution, according to new information given to author of the controversial book, "Shoot Straight You Bastards”.
February 27, 2002, marked the 100th anniversary of the execution of Lieutenants Harry "Breaker” Morant and Bathurst's Peter Handcock in Pretoria South Africa for allegedly murdering Boer prisoners.
The pair insisted they were acting under orders of Lord Kitchener, but were found guilty of the crime and executed by a firing squad of Cameron Highlanders.
In 1910 Lord Kitchener unveiled Bathurst's Boer War Memorial.
For decades there has been speculation that Lord Kitchener insisted Lieut Handcock's name be removed from the honour roll or he would refuse to unveil the memorial.
Handcock's name was missing until 1964 when it was added to the honour roll after lobbying by Lieut Handcock's son.
John Martin, of Bathurst, sent "Shoot Straight You Bastards” author Nick Bleszynski details which he said confirmed the Handcock family's claim that the name was removed from the memorial by order of Lord Kitchener.
These claims have been included in a revised edition of the book.
