The Battalion was originally offered the Freedom of Entry 40 years ago in 1969, then again in the 1990s but it wasn’t until this weekend that everything finally came together.
Adjutant Captain Matthew Dirago said the 1/19 has a proud history. Originally known as the Bushman’s Rifles the infantry battalion dates back to Australia’s earliest involvement in overseas conflict.
Capt Dirago said there were 130 reservists on parade with another 100 family members and friends present on top of all the community members who turned out to watch the battalion enter the city.
After being inspected by Mayor Paul Toole at Bathurst Sportsground and granted freedom of entry to the city, the battalion was challenged by Superintendent of the Chifley Local Area Command Michael Robinson.
The 1/19 then exercised their right by marching through the streets of Bathurst with colours flying, drums beating and flags waving.
The company is based here in Bathurst with members from Lithgow, Cowra, Orange, Dubbo, Parkes, Wagga and Leeton.
“It was an honour and a privilege,” Capt Dirago said.
“The members of the battalion absolutely loved it.”
The spectacle was followed on Saturday evening by the battalion’s annual ball.
Mayor Paul Toole said the parade was a historic occasion for Bathurst.
He said it is only the third time in history that a Freedom of Entry Parade has occurred in the city.
“It’s an ancient tradition whereby a connection between a city and a military unit is made,” Cr Toole said.
“It was therefore great to see the city of Bathurst turn out for this very special event.
“It was also great to be a part of it,” he said.
Capt Dirago said the battalion is going from strength to strength and is now looking for new members.
