The budding architect will travel to Uganda today with local architectural practice Integrated Design Group to master plan a city.
“I’m pretty excited to see everything,” he said. “Just to be on site will be good experience.”
Angus, 19, is taking a gap year after completing his Higher School Certificate at St Stanislaus’ College last year. He will spend 15 days in Uganda with a team of architects, including company director Tony McBurney.
“It’s a great opportunity,” he said. “I’ve always had an interest in architecture. When I was in Year 10 I did my work experience with Tony and it’s grown from there.”
The achievements have been rolling in for the teenager. Last month, he attended the opening of ArtExpress 2011, an exhibition which features some of the most outstanding artworks developed for the 2010 NSW Higher School Certificate in Visual Arts. It is on display at the Art Gallery of NSW until April 10.
Angus was one of 44 students from across the state whose work was selected for the exhibition.
“It was really cool to be chosen,” he said. “I didn’t expect it at all.”
Angus submitted a residential and commercial building design entitled ‘E37’. He said the building utilised modern environmental advances, such as water conservation and solar power.
“I wanted to explore new ways of creating communities that are sustainable and manageable,” he said. “One of the purposes of the building was to cut down on the effects of transportation by encouraging people to live and work in the same place.”
Angus designed the building using architectural software ArchiCAD. He then rendered his work with Artlantis, a three-dimensional rendering and animation application.
The 19-year-old said he has plans to study architecture at university next year.
