Sydney Motorsport Park will play host to the final round of the 2016 Shannons Nationals.
Lead event is the Australian Production Car Series Sydney 4 Hour Grand Final.
They have attracted a strong 32 car field, again showing the strength of this series that in 2017 will start with the Hi Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour.
In what is a coup for organisers, just months after his breakthrough Indianapolis 500 campaign, third generation racing star Matthew Brabham will compete alongside talented Sydneysider Leigh Burges in the Class B #11 DPO BMW 335i that won the inaugural Bathurst 6 hour when driven by Nathan Morcom and Chaz Mostert.
The 22 year old grandson of the late Sir Jack Brabham said he is looking forward to his APC experience, as different as it may be to the IndyCar he raced in his first Indianapolis 500 for PIRTEK Team Murray in May.
“The Aussie Production Car series has always looked like a lot of fun.
It’s been great to see so many of my buddies I grew up racing karts with in Australia move up through the ranks and become successful in Motorsports,” said Brabham, who sends his thanks to Leigh and Gerry Burges for having him on-board.
“I’ve been taking more interest in the series since Aaron Seton, Chaz (Mostert) and Nathan (Morcom) have all done some races.
It seems like they have all enjoyed great racing in fun cars and awesome tracks, which makes me want to join in on the action and have some fun myself.
“I will drive anything and I enjoy every aspect of motor racing - this is a fantastic opportunity for me to jump into a car and have another race while I’m back in Australia.”
Brabham will share the car with Leigh Burges, who started racing go karts at the age of 12 and was one of Australia’s youngest drivers to obtain his CAMS race licence at the age of 15 to progress into circuit racing.
Burges boasts a career racing a wide range of race cars from Formula Ford, Production Touring Cars, Historic Group A and even Tarmac Rally, and has also spent many years as a race car driver coach, training other racers and also providing on-track services for Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen and BMW.
“I believe it will be a great combination. One of my first ever real experiences with a car was at SMP in a BMW when I was very young and tagging along on some of Dad’s BMW Driver Training days. So it is pretty cool to be back driving with Leigh in a BMW,” Brabham said.
