The church received the funds three years ago and while the then Reverend Tim Abbey would not reveal the name of the late parishioner, he said the funds would help ensure the church’s longevity.
Current Presbyterian Reverend David Whittingham said additional funds were added and the project was now worth $750,000.
Built in 1872, on the corner of George and Howick streets, the church will receive a new creche, larger foyer and breakout spaces, increased seating capacity, improved sound facilities and new amenities.
Pews will be relocated and a larger, more accessible entrance on the eastern side of the building will be constructed.
The church and hall will soon also be connected by an enclosed walkway.
“We’re looking forward to having a revitalised building to better accommodate our growth,” Reverend Whittingham said.
As well as seeking to modernise the building, he said he was also very conscious of its historical significance.
“We’ve tried to be really mindful of the history of the place and be mindful of including that,” Reverend Whittingham said.
“Over time the building has seen lots of changes, but we’re hoping to return it more clearly to how it was originally intended.”
Integrated Design Group director and architect Tony McBurney said the new layout will help it to be more welcoming to the community.
“The church is looking outward to the community,” he said.
Works are expected to be complete by Christmas.
