Though the Georges Plains trainer-driver did not do quite as well as when he won three Group 2 Breeders Blue deciders, his team still impressed at the Bathurst Paceway.
Taylors Mill won the Group 3 two-year-old fillies Regional Final (1,730 metres), with stablemate Kept In Play third in that same $30,000 decider.
Both Make Me Memphis (two-year-old colts and geldings) and Pretty Hot (four-year-old entires and geldings) ran third in their finals, the former’s effort super impressive given he broken stride in the opening stages of his race and conceded a huge amount of ground to his rivals.
Make Mine Heaven (four-year-old mares) missed out by just a head when running second to Million Dollar Gem and on top of that, Hewitt won one of the meeting’s support races with Royal Story.
Those results added to what has been Hewitt’s most successful season as a trainer, with 94 winners, 72 second placings and 86 thirds as of Sunday evening.
His biggest moment of the NSW Breeders Challenge Regional Finals, all of which carried an $18,000 purse for the winner, came in the first decider to be staged.
Hewitt had qualified three members of his team for the two-year-old fillies finale – the $2.10 favourite Kept In Play, Lady Swiss ($8.40) and Taylors Mill ($5.80).
It was the latter which Hewitt elected to drive and as it eventuated, his selection was spot on.
After working three-wide in the middle stages and settling in the death seat, Taylors Mill hit the lead with some 60m to go.
“It’s great to win this race. She has been a model of consistency all season, so it’s good to win this nice race with her,” Hewitt said.
“She’s shown great staying qualities, but when there was a bit of trouble early and the speed dropped, I thought the best thing was to get her to the front.”

Earlier it was stablemate Kept In Play, with Mat Rue in the gig, that set the tempo.
Rue guided her forward from barrier three and was able to cross Kiamasrosie, who galloped soon after and left others having to take evasive action.
Taylors Mill was one of them, with Hewitt opting to keep pushing forward three-wide towards the lead. He was helped by the speed dropping at the front, Kept In Play clocking a 30.6 seconds second sectional and 31.8 through the third.
It stacked the field up behind Kept In Play through the bend, Taylors Mill a long head behind her, and down the home straight the challenges came.
Taylors Mill went on to win by 1.3m over Casurina Belmer ($16.70).
