Just after Spike Robyn won a thrilling opener his performance was somehow upstaged by Bernie Hewitt’s outside shot Makoa ($49.20) in the Burnt Blades Horse Dentistry Pace (1730 metres).
The top six runners in the race were all separated by just over two metres.
Gotta Go Jazzy Jet was in a great position to lead all the way as favourite but had to deal with late outside challenges from Makoa and Hidden Courage.
Makoa finished a half neck clear of Hidden Courage while Gotta Go Jazzy Jet had to settle for third, only a neck away from victory.
Cankickatarget (1.1m), Im Cool Harry (1.4m) and Taylors Reason (2.1m) could all count themselves unlucky not to feature inside the top three.
The 1:55.6 mile rate was a career best time for Makoa.
