Norwood Park general manager Stephen Beer said he has known for years that section four was filling up and more space would be required.
Section five is being prepared on the Bradwardine Road side of the cemetery, near the entrance.
Mr Beer said section four is expected to be full in around eight months, so the new section will be completed prior to that time.
“We’ll level it, compact it and that will be available for future burials,” he said.
The new section is part of a series of works that have been carried out at the cemetery in recent years.
Significant landscaping was carried out on the corner of the Mitchell Highway and Bradwardine Road, seeing a reflective pond created for people to use when remembering their loved ones.

A gazebo was also constructed, along with tree plantings in the area.
More recently, the cemetery has offered new options for burials, with families now able to purchase more prominent headstones for graves.
These differ greatly from the plaques on the ground that are seen on a lot of graves within the cemetery, and the new option can be customised to suit the wishes of a family.
Ash walls have also been constructed for people who choose cremation.
“We continually develop so families can memorialise their loved ones,” Mr Beer said.
He added that Bathurst Regional Council had been very helpful throughout the ongoing development.
