After working with Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory last month, Courtney Glazebrook, director of Towri Macs said during the visit to a number of similar services she realised every community had its own Aboriginal Art Centre; and with it came many benefits.
Back in Bathurst, she said there is no reason why a similar idea couldn’t be established at Towri MACS.
She has already identified a possible building on site, an unused room which was once the original childcare centre.
While it would need some work to convert into an art centre, she said would be ideal location, and would bring many benefits to the Indigenous community.
“The scope of Towri MACS is much wider then just child care, its a centre which keeps Indigenous families connected,” she said.
Ms Glazebrook said she would love to expand the service.
“We don’t have an Indigenous art centre, it’s the one thing that missing from Bathurst.
“In the Northern Territory the one thing I noticed was every community had an art centre. Artists would go in paint, sell their their work, it was a community driven project,” she said.
And the art centre could potentially just be the beginning.
Ms Glazebrook would also love see a Young Mob group, which could come in after school and be involved in the centre.
