The modified competition, which gets underway at George Park 2 this Friday, is aimed at giving players of all ages and experiences a chance to enjoy a contact-free AFL experience.
Bushrangers women’s captain Kelsey Richards said the format is one which puts the social elements of the game at the forefront.
“It’s about meeting new people and trying something new. It’s open to everyone,” she said.
“In addition to it being purely fun and recreational it’s an opportunity for people to try a new sport and use AFL9s as a potential stepping stone into competitive footy that we play during winter.
“We’re accepting all junior and senior players so hopefully people really buy into it and give it a go.”

Registrations will be open for teams beyond the opening week of competition.
The cost per team is $300, while individuals who don’t have a team and are interested in playing can be slotted into a side.
The competition uses modified rules to help players get to grips with the fundamentals of the game.
“Even the footy is made of different material,” Richards said.
“It’s on a modified field played in thirds, with forwards, mids and backs. The ball has to travel in each third and only forwards can kick goals.
“The rules are flexible too, and can be adjusted from elite AFL9s all the way through to recreational 9s, which is what we do. It’s non-contact and for the Bathurst competition we’ve opened it up to all ages.”
