Only 5.7 metres separated first and last when My General Lee ($26) sprung a shock win in the lead up event to the night’s feature Shirley Turnbull Memorial.
My General Lee ended his 15-run dry spell in what was just his second journey to Bathurst for trainer Michael Doltoff.
“He didn’t have to burn a lot to get to the front and he was happy to be there,” winning driver Michael Towers said.
“He’s been going good at Menangle, racing up in class, and he was down in class here tonight.”
Race favourite Lets Katchmeifucan ($2.25) got away strongly, as expected, from the inside gate and Our Wall Street Wolf came across quickly from gate five to join him in front.
My General Lee was caught out three wide on the first turn and Towers was left with a choice whether to drop back or put in the hard yards to get forward.

He took the latter option and got in front of Our Wall Street Wolf for the death seat run.
The running order remained set in stone until there was 400m left.
Our Wall Street Wolf peeled out three wide and Sweet As Candy went wider in the run for home.
Lets Katchmeifucan still looked the one to beat as Dream To Share took the inside route and My General Lee drew up alongside him.
My General Lee plugged away at the leader and got his neck in front with less than 50m to race.
Lets Katchmeifucan was second ahead of Dream To Share ($5.50).
Bernie Hewitt’s favourite came up just short in his bid to record back-to-back victories for the third time in his career.
The final quarter of 27.2 seconds was the second fastest of the meeting.
