Islam-West; Building Bridges In Challenging Times
ON Tuesday, September 17, Associate Professor Mehmet Ozalp, a prominent Muslim community leader in Australia, will provide an introduction to Islam and discuss the importance of building bridges between Islam and the West in these challenging times, and of repairing, maintaining and strengthening inter-faith dialogue and harmony.
Professor Ozalp is a theologian, author and academic and the founding director of the Centre for Islamic Studies and Civilisation (CISAC) at Charles Sturt University.
Professor Ozalp has pioneered designing and conducting Islamic courses in English within the Muslim community since 2000.
He has developed and written material for numerous courses on Islamic theology, history and contemporary Islam issues, including a four-year advanced course titled Theology of Qur'an.
Professor Ozalp has worked in the interfaith and intercultural scene in Australia since 2000.
In 2009, he founded Islamic Sciences and Research Academy (ISRA) Australia, an educational and research organisation focusing on providing information and educational services on Islam and Muslims.
Professor Ozalp was a member of the Harmony Reference Group established by NSW Premier Bob Carr in 2003.

Rusted Off: Why Country Australia Is Fed Up
ON Wednesday, October 9, journalist Gabrielle Chan will be at the library to discuss her book Rusted Off: Why Country Australia Is Fed Up, exploring the big questions driving Australian voters.
Why are we so fed up with politics? Why are formerly rusted-on country voters deserting major parties in greater numbers than their city cousins? Can ordinary people teach us more about the way forward for government?
Gabrielle Chan has been a journalist for more than 30 years. Since 2013, she has worked for Guardian Australia as a political correspondent, Politics Live blogger and senior writer.
Her book, Rusted Off: Why Country Australia Is Fed Up, which explores the disconnect between Canberra and its political class and those who live in regional Australia, among other topics, was released in September 2018.
Explorations Series talks start at 6pm and refreshments are provided before the talks begin.
