PUNTERS didn't give Gabbys Sportstar much of a chance to win Saturday's TAB Elvis Championship Heat at Parkes but the Nathan Hurst-trained gelding was at his best to win his race in the popular country series.

Gabbys Sportstar ($19, David McKenzie) led home an unlikely trio of horses in the night's opening heat as Rocknroll Ava ($31, Steve Turnbull) and Dunno Jo ($19, Amanda Turnbull) produced a trifecta worth $2,300 for anyone lucky enough to pick the first three to the finish line.
Gabbys Sportstar got away smoothly to take the sit behind Dunno Jo in the early stages of the heat.
Caribbean Jack got to the death with Ideal Billy in tow. Rocknroll Ava was next on the outside line.
On the final lap Gabbys Sportstar was pocketed by Caribbean Jack on the turn for home and would need some space to open up.
Thanks to a slow opening half the leaders had plenty of running in them and so did Gabbys Sportstar who had been sitting pretty behind Dunno Jo the whole trip.
The gap did eventuate between Caribbean Jack and Dunno Jo, and driver David McKenzie pounced on the opportunity to win in a 2:02.4 mile rate.
Rocknroll Ava had the run of the race down the outside of the track but came up a half head short.
"That's the way David and I thought it might work out. It doesn't always go to plan but it did this time," Hurst said.
"Around the bend it didn't look like he was going to get that run so he got lucky there but he was good enough to get through it.
"He's had a couple of trials leading into that race. His first one was a bit ordinary but the second one was really good so we thought he'd go alright with the right run."
There was success for Bathurst trainers in the night's other heat as The Mustang saluted in style for Bernie Hewitt.
The Mustang ($3.10) and stablemate Taylors Mill ($3 favourite) both finished inside the top three, prevented from going 1-2 by Greg Rue's Joetomo ($5.50).
The final is set to run on Wednesday 8, while this Tuesday another Parkes meeting will take place.
