To mark World Water Day on March 22, the group of students has taken on an unusual mission.
For the month of March, students in Year 7 (Kosciusko and Batman classes) at Denison College's Kelso and Bathurst campuses - along with their teachers Sharon Mendes and Heidi Waldron - are undertaking the Water Challenge, which will see them drink only water for the month.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Ms Mendes, the Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) head teacher, said one-in-nine people worldwide did not have access to clean, safe drinking water.
"As we know water is essential for life and good health," Ms Mendes said.
"The challenge is about the students appreciating water and the issues that surround a safe reliable water supply.
"As part of their studies in geography they look at the topic Water in the World so the challenge fits with what they will be studying in class."
As the event is a fundraiser for communities without access to fresh water, students who break the challenge are fined $2.
Likewise if there is an event coming up where they need to drink something apart from water, like a sports carnival, they can also buy a water pass, which enables them to drink other fluids on the day.
Ms Mendes said during the event students would also commit to walking 10,000 steps in a day in recognition of those who don't have access to water, and have to walk up to 30 minutes to access it.
