THE days of plain old sandwiches filling out the menu at children's centres are in the past, according to Erica Hume.

Ms Hume, the chef at Great Beginnings at Kelso, which opened off Gilmour Street at the end of January, serves up everything from fruit and vegetable platters to honey and soy pork stir fry to carrot cake to her hungry youngsters.
"We make it [the carrot cake] on wholemeal flour," she said. "It's a bit healthier than normal fibre."
Ms Hume's menu is not just a hit with the kids, it's also been recognised by the NSW Government.
Having submitted the healthy menu plan for the centre to the NSW Government's Healthy Kids website, Ms Hume was rewarded with a $500 voucher to be spent on plants to grow fresh vegetables and herbs as part of the centre's sustainability program.
With the sun out on Monday, and moisture in the soil from last week's rain, some of the centre's children got their hands dirty by planting lettuce that will eventually find its way on to the centre's menu.

Centre manager Erin Judge said she was pleased to see the members of her team winning early accolades.
"It's really important to establish healthy eating patterns early in life for their [children's] physical and mental wellbeing," she said.
