But the group has managed to adapt admirably though a carefully planned approach to online communication.
Bathurst Family History Group secretary Graeme Hill said members have embraced a number of electronic mediums in lieu of physical gathering.
"We created a private Facebook group last week for members to join, and we've moved our meetings to Zoom," Mr Hill said.
"The process has been simple for us, and we've coped far better than we thought we would considering 65 is the average age of our members."
The Bathurst Family History Group has around 300 members, half of which live outside the region in communities all across Australia.
Mr Hill said the group is considering their next general meeting on May 23 via Zoom.
"A key positive of holding our next meeting via Zoom is that it'll allow members outside Bathurst to join in," he said.
"The program is easy to download, and we'll be running tutorials for members new to Zoom."
While the switch to online meetings has worked well, Mr Hill admits the group is missing face-to-face interaction.
"We set up our research centre behind the Seymour Centre late last year, which we've had to close during COVID-19," he said.
"Social interaction is a major part of our group function, and we hope our lives will be back to normal in a few months time.
The Bathurst Family History Group celebrated their 35th anniversary last year.
