Kirkconnell Correctional Centre handed over a cheque for $3213.10 yesterday, sourced by a fundraising drive carried out at the facility by staff and inmates.
Security manager Dale Ashcroft said fundraising initiatives are part of the centre's program to instil a sense of social responsibility into inmates.
"The inmates have a committee focused on finding deserving nonprofit businesses to raise funds for, and we were all in agreement that Meals on Wheels were deserving of this donation," he said.
"This fundraising drive has been in the works since before Christmas, and, especially in today's climate, we hope this donation will go a long way to support Meals on Wheels in carrying out their essential service.
Meals on Wheels manager Linda Roszkiewicz said the donation will go towards trolleys to reduce double-handling of food.
"Due to COVID, we've had a huge increase in clients, which has forced us to double-handle a lot of produce," Ms Roszkiewicz said.
"We are only partially funded by the government, so any additional funding we receive means a great deal."
Ms Roszkiewicz said Meals on Wheels has faced a tough period during COVID-19, but has adapted well to social distancing and hygiene guidelines, the latter of which was already a high priority through food preparation.
Meals on Wheels prepares anywhere between 7000 to 10,000 meals a week for Central West clients.
