WHEN the frost strikes and the workload increases at Dennis Picker's farm he knows his uncle is more than willing to help keep his horses in top condition.

That's why the stable of Georges Plains trainer Bernie Hewitt's has grown a little over the past few months as he gives Picker's pacers the chance to continue their work.
One of those horses in particular, Herbs Hero, has been a standout performer at his temporary home.
He's won both his Bathurst races with ease and goes around for his third attempt at the track in Wednesday night's Moorhead Cranes Pace (2,260 metres).
Hewitt said it's been great to welcome some new faces into the stable for a short stay.
"I took over for some of my nephew's horses in winter because he's busy with farm work. He's sent half a dozen up here. His track also doesn't stand up so well during winter," he said.
Herbs Hero goes out from widest on the front row for his upcoming race, but he's had to already contend with tough draws in both his Bathurst events so far.
He shapes up in the betting as the horse to watch, while Mat Rue's Authoritative will command some attention on the back row.
It's been a long and tough process for both Picker and Hewitt to get Herbs Hero ready for the racing scene.
"He'd had a leg injury going back 18 months ago and he started working him for a while and now I've worked him for a few months as well, just bringing him along gradually," Hewitt said.
"He'd been off the scene for a while but he's had two good starts back. He needed a long time off with that tendon injury and we needed to be careful bringing him back.
"Hopefully he can stand up and get a decent campaign under his belt. So far so good. There's been no problems with his legs. He's the type of horse who can race in the metro region at some point."
That seems a likely scenario for the Shadow Play gelding who has now amassed eight wins and three placings from his 14 career starts.
Hewitt has an inkling of what Picker might like to do once Herbs Hero finds his way back to his regular stable.
"We'll get him up to full race fitness and I'd say Dennis will take him back in the spring. He might be considering a trip to Brisbane with him towards Christmas time," he said.
"I'd imagine he'd be on that float north with a couple of his other horses here. Albion Park is probably that first target and then Menangle later on."
Hewitt also has Lady Swiss well positioned in the race from gate two.
The mare returns from a brief one month rest away from the track. Prior to that she picked up a win and a placing in her July starts at Bathurst.
It's otherwise a quiet meeting for Hewitt.
He has none of his other horses entered at the meeting and has only one other drive, on Peter Trevor-Jones' Burns Bay in the proceeding event.
Bathurst's eight race Wednesday meeting starts from 5.07pm.
