Steve Turnbull's Warrawee Drinking was sent out as a $26 shot for the Group 2 NSW Breeders Challenge True Blue 2YO Colts and Geldings Final (1,609 metres) but made punters look silly with his superb run home.
Mitch Turnbull peeled Warrawee Drinking out wide from midfield and started to eat away at the lead Gemma Hewitt's Kashed Up ($3, Luke McCarthy) had started to build.
Chris Frisby's favourite Our Uncle Dan ($2, Anthony Frisby) couldn't offer a challenge after battling the breeze, and it was left to the two other Bathurst-trained horses to fight it out.
Warrawee Drinking got the nod in the photo finish, edging out Hewitt's runner by a short half head.
Turnbull said Warrawee Drinking has shown similar sprinting prowess before - but never against this quality of opposition.
"He ran a really good race at Dubbo one night in a similar sort of way, only he'd done a lot of work and he still ran second that day," he said.
"We knew he could do it, and he hasn't had much luck with draws since then."
Mitch Turnbull had to make a snap call on the straight which way to bring his runner into the race and his dad believes he made a sound call to take the longer run out wide with clear air.
"Mitch got it spot on. The one in front of him stopped on him a bit so he had to make his mind up about what he needed to do," he said.
"He elected to come out wide, wind him up and just got him home.
"Chris' horse [Our Uncle Dan] did a lot of work up in the death seat and might have been over the top a little top. Our bloke had a hard run on the Wednesday but he backed up beautifully."
Peter Trevor-Jones' Misdemeanor ($16, Cameron Hart) came a heartbreaking third in a three-way photo finish for the 3YO fillies race, going down to Our Antonio Rose ($5.50, Jack Trainor) and Keep Rockin ($1.33 favourite, Luke McCarthy).
Mat Rue's Beast Mode was third in the 3YO Colts and Geldings edition, finishing well but not figuring in the finish between Katchar Shoobee ($1.90 favourite, Brian Portelli) and Mister Armstrong ($19, Jack Trainor).
