The work will include widening the road shoulder and installing safety barriers at Walang, around 20 kilometres east of Bathurst.
Bathurst MP Paul Toole said funding for the work had been allocated as part of Saving Lives on Country Roads program to provide safer journeys for motorists.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
"The crash history between Lithgow and Bathurst features a high incidence of run off road crashes and in some locations a high incidence of cross centre line crashes," Mr Toole said.
"The upgrade will involve widening the road shoulder, installing safety barriers, relocating road signs, and repainting road markings to provide a safer and more forgiving road environment for motorists."
Work is expected to take four weeks to complete, weather permitting. Work will be carried out between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Friday.
For the safety of workers and motorists, lane closures and speed reductions of 40km/h in both directions will be in place during the work.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead, drive to the conditions, and obey signs and traffic control.
Transport for NSW thanks motorists for their patience while this important safety improvement work is carried out.
