His wife, Bianca Ryan, posted an update on his condition last week after the December 2 surgery.

While there were some complications, he is recovering well.

"He had a few complications, including a collapsed lung and weakness down the right side of his body," she said. "He will need physiotherapy and some rehabilitation for a little bit but we are so happy and optimistic about how he is recovering and the future to come."

Friend and an organiser of fundraising efforts, Grant Maskill-Dowton, said that Lorne has since returned home after his surgery, performed by Dr Charlie Teo.

"He seems to be recovering as well as you can after a surgery like that. It's slow and steady, but his recovery was better than you could expect. Every day he is improving and there's really good progress with it," Mr Maskill-Dowton said.

Family and friends of Lorne launched a GoFundMe page last month to help raise money for the surgery to remove the cyst.

It was having a huge impact on his life, leading to symptoms including vision problems, vertigo, nausea, headaches, body aches, fatigue, insomnia, and memory loss.

Those symptoms left him unable to work and prevented him from engaging in a lot of activities with his two children, Marty and Grace.

While the family did have private heath insurance, it didn't cover everything and they needed $40,000 to have the surgery and follow-ups.

To date, the fundraiser has collected close to $25,000 for the family.

Both Mr Maskill-Dowton and Mrs Ryan have thanked everyone in the Bathurst community who has donated to help make the surgery possible.

The fundraiser is still active for those who want to donate.

"Any little bit will help, but the main thing is [Lorne] managed to get the surgery done and we couldn't have gotten to that point without the money raised so far," Mr Maskill-Dowton said.
