It is with concern that I respond to the recent discussion about proposed bans of scooters and skateboards in the CBD.
This issue should be about better proactive enforcement of the current rules, not more rules with the aim to penalise.
In my opinion, the community should be concerned as to Cr Alex Christian's recent on-air comments as to good and bad kids and his views as to further harming those already at a disadvantage in our society.
Firstly, do not think that I do not see the concern as to the use of these devices and particularly technology that increasingly sees them as effortless electric means of transportation.

But at the same time, a ban of either device (and next it will be electric pushbikes) is pointless. Why? Because for a ban to be effective, it must be enforced - but better enforcement of the current rules would see the same outcome.
A greater, more regular presence of police and perhaps council rangers on foot patrol, interacting with the community, educating our youth and adults alike as to appropriate behaviour of these devices (and generally) is what is needed.
