Six brave contestants entered the Fun Fair Summer Splash pie eating contest at the Bathurst Showground yesterday to consume as many pies as possible in 10 minutes, with $100, a $50 showbag and a lollipop on offer for the winner.
The pies, provided by local business Luscious Lucy Plump 'mmm' Juicy, weighed around 350 grams each, and contestants were given five to consume within the 10-minute period.
Bathurst local Beau Marceau was crowned the winner of the contest, managing to consume all five pies [1.75 kilograms of food] three seconds out from time.
"It gets pretty hard once you get to the fourth pie, but I pay Luscious Lucy a visit quite regularly, so I knew what to expect," Mr Marceau said.
"They make amazing pies and sausage rolls, and with my prior knowledge, I knew I'd be in with a shot."
The contestants were served a variety of pies, including pepper steak, chicken and vegetables and chilli.
Luscious Lucy owner Cara Oloman said the bakery was thrilled to be given the opportunity to facilitate an attraction at the popular community event.
"The Fun Fair has been a welcome family-orientated boost for the Bathurst community after COVID and we're very thankful for the opportunity to enhance the event," Ms Oloman said.
"I think the contestants certainly received more than they bargained for with the pies, but I was impressed to see some were up to the challenge."
The contest also included a children's category, as well as the Luscious Lucy chili beef challenge: five chili pies, four sweet pies with fresh cream, two sausage roles, a packet of Doritos and five cans of Coke.
Fun Fair manager Jade Evans said the addition of attractions outside of the rides and water slides proved to be a big hit with visitors.
"The thong throwing contest was popular among children, and the fireworks were well received by the local community," Ms Evans said.
"We've had sessions sell out and because of the number of attractions, there hasn't been any long queues, and the novelty events have only added to the fun."
