Earlier this month the Brad Widdup-trained Miss Magnum tried to make up ground from the back of the field at Muswellbrook, finishing second, but in Monday's race jockey Alysha Collett had the filly setting the pace.

Despite Miss Magnum ($5) looking a little bit lost on the home stretch she was still focused enough to see off Sea Stitch ($13, Kathy O'Hara) by a length with Miss Jay Fox ($3.30, Brodie Loy) a further length back in third.

Collett, having her second ride on the filly, said racing Miss Magnum further forward should be the way to go for her future runs.

"It's the first time she's been to the front because it's a hard track to make up ground on," she said.

"Once she had the momentum up she was fine. She got a little lost over the last 100 metres when she hit the front but when she knuckled down and realised what was coming she worked to the line.

"She'll learn a lot from this. She'll keep going on with the job. She's good more good runs to come.

"I think she's definitely a front running horse but, ideally, if you could take a sit behind one she'll have a better turn of foot. On these sorts of tracks you can't take that for granted and you've got to hustle and bustle a bit."

Collett got Miss Magnum out of the barriers quickly and found herself caught in an early four-horse scrap for control of the race alongside Miss Jay Fox, Roam Free and Sea Stitch.

Miss Jay Fox put in the extra work to come across and take up the running and Miss Magnum raced alongside her all the way to the turn for home.

The pair continued to go stride for stride until Miss Magnum worked clear with a little under 200 metres left.

Sea Stitch emerged as the only possible hope of bringing down the leader but there was not enough track left for him to make the winning move.

Favourite Roam Free ($2.80, Chad Lever) came home fourth, three lengths off the winner.

It was the fourth career start for Miss Magnum, who has started to showcase her potential over her latest two runs.

Her last on debut and distant fifth at Canberra in her follow up run will now be distant memories for Widdup.
