The Sustainable Living Expo, organised by the council's Environment and Events teams, is a case in point.
It will be held at the showground on Saturday morning, March 27.
OTHER RECENT ECO NEWS COLUMNS:
If we are trying to live sustainably, we are looking for ways in which we can tread more lightly on the land, reducing our use of the earth's resources, and leaving more for our children and grandchildren.
Why is this important?
Every year, we use resources that need to be kept for the future. This is marked by Earth Overshoot Day, the date on which we will have used up our allotted share of earth's resources.
For the world as a whole, this is August 22. Australia's Earth Overshoot Day this year is March 22, the date on which it is calculated Earth Overshoot Day would fall if all of humanity consumed like Australians.
Canada and the US reached their overshoot day on March 14, and New Zealand will not reach theirs until May 15. Indonesia's is the furthest away, on December 18.
The Sustainable Living Expo gives us all an opportunity to think about our consumption of the earth's resources, to talk to people who are already embracing these ideas, to learn ways to do this, and to put them into practice.
Looking for ways we can tread more lightly.
As well as the usual Farmers' Market stalls with organic food, and local products with low food miles, the expo offers upcycled craft kits, children's theatre, Australian wildlife displays, and ideas from TV chef "Fast Ed" Halmagyi on cooking and eating in a sustainable way.
Earth Hour, a worldwide event, is coincidentally scheduled for 8.30 to 9.30pm on the day of the Sustainable Living Expo.
We are all encouraged to use no power for that hour, and make a #Switch for Nature. This is to remind us that we can make simple switches in our daily life to help save the planet.
Bathurst Community Climate Action Network has a stall every year, and River Yarners will be there with some examples of fibre crafts that visually represent the increasing heat of our planet.
Please come to visit us, and check out the solar toy cars, as well as having a chat about how we reduce waste, save water, and recycle to support the environment.
