It's a question that the gelding's Kialla trainer-driver David Moran no doubt asked himself.
"He's got a lot of ability but he's just got to sort of put it all in line. There are a lot of times when he probably doesn't put in 110 percent and you know, that will probably make him or break him as a race horse," Moran admitted.
"He was a little bit better again tonight, it was a little bit of a shame that we couldn't of had him up with a couple of runs under his belt before the heats last week, but that's racing."
As a two-year-old Lochinvar Chief won four of his 10 starts, while he also ran second in the Group 1 Gold Crown and Group 2 Sapling Stakes.
In his Gold Chalice heat he showed gate speed and led, but then surrendered front spot and ended up 15m off the pace in fourth.
But in the consolation he was on song, blazing out in a 26.4 seconds first quarter then bringing it home to win by 11m.
