The centre says motorists can now pass the site using one lane under alternating stop/slow traffic control.

Motorists are advised to take extra care and allow extra travel time.

5pm: A truck on fire has continued a troubled run for the Great Western Highway between Bathurst and Sydney.

After an Easter weekend with the traditional heavy traffic and long delays, the Transport Management Centre said in an alert on Tuesday afternoon that the Great Western Highway was closed in both directions at South Bowenfels, near Lithgow, due to a truck fire near Forty Bends Road.

The Transport Management Centre said motorists were advised to avoid the area.

The centre said motorists could use Chifley Road and Darling Causeway as an alternative route, but warned traffic was heavy in the area, so motorists should allow plenty of extra travel time.

The alert was still current just before 5pm.
