Not many excuses are better, though, than raising money for the Black Dog Institute.
One man in the region who will be letting his locks grow is Burilda Park's Leigh Cragg, who has been touched personally by the devastating effects of mental ill-health.
"Alex [Leigh's wife] struck up a friendship with a young girl online who followed our horsemanship Facebook page ... She recently took her life and this really shook us both," Mr Cragg said.
"She was the third person in our world to take their life over the last 12 months, all under 25 years old, so we saw the Mullets For Mental Health initiative and thought, why not?"
IN OTHER NEWS:
The husband and wife duo have developed a large social media following through their business Burilda Park Equine in the Oberon district and plan to utilise that for advertisement to raise funds.
Not only will Mr Cragg be growing a mullet, his nine-month-old son Paddy will be joining him.
"I've never done a fundraiser before ever, so I'm excited to get behind something that makes such an impact," Mr Cragg said.
"I'm hoping to raise $2000 for the cause, but mostly I hope that by sporting such a cool hairstyle, people can ask 'why the mullet' and we can have a conversation about the whole cause.
"I think that's the point at the heart of it: awareness."
The initiative will run for the month of September and Mr Cragg is off to a great start, already raising more than $2000 for the cause.
He hopes to be a role model for Paddy and show him that "the lines of communication are always open".
