Bathurst Regional Council has amended its Local Environmental Plan to allow for a range of moveable and monumental items to be heritage listed, with over 350 now on the list.
The updated list includes three privately/community owned items, which are the portable ballroom at 4824 Great Western Highway in Glanmire, the railway gantry crane in Alpha Street, and the Hill End Honours Rolls at Hill End Public School.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
There are also a number of items that are owned by council.
They are: the Peter Brock statue; kite structure and Broken Blade; the Bronze Soldier; Ranken's Bridge Pillar; Sofala foot bridge; and the Sofala dredging monument.
In addition to these, existing listings were amended to include the following items: Ben Chifley Engine; Bathurst Flagstaff site and declaration monument, Pillars of Bathurst, the Footsteps in Time Pillar and steam roller; the horse trough; and Hill End War Memorial.
To council's disappointment, though, some items were not able to be included on the list and gazetted, they being the Bathurst District Historical Society collection, the Rockley Mill and Museum collection, Bathurst Agricultural Research Station collection, and the Chinese Shrine Cabinet at Bathurst Goldfields.
This was because the Department of Planning, Infrastructure and Environment informed council that the listing of collections and non-fixed structures is currently not supported by it.
Deputy mayor Monica Morse was particularly concerned that the historical society's collection could not be included on the list.
"It is a concern, because the historical society has the most valuable items in the sense that they're valuable to Bathurst and somehow we need to make sure that that is protected under some form or other," she said.
Council has said it will revisit these items at a later date, if it can renegotiate a changed position with the DPIE in relation to historical collections.
