Coles is one of 57 shooters from a list 112 applicants across the pistol, rifle and shotgun disciplines who made the cut to be included in one of the three national squads.
The pathways squad, as the name suggests, is for athletes who are considered capable of achieving national team selection based largely on their performances in domestic competition.
Coles has previously represented Australia, in 2019 he won pairs gold for at the Qatar Open, and he has frequently tested the nation's leading trap shooters.
Being named in the pathways squad is a step towards helping him get further chances to represent in the green and gold.
"We have assigned athletes to different squads - high performance, performance and pathways - in recognition of their current level of performance and to ensure that we can provide them with support and opportunities that are appropriate for their stage of athletic development," Adam Sachs, Shooting Australia's high performance director, said.
"We can see Australia starting to open up again in 2022 after a significant period of COVID-related restrictions, and our national coaches and high performance staff are excited about getting back to the range - in training and competition - to support the progress of our national squad athletes."
