With a love for beautifully-scented candles and the need for a creative outlet, local resident Casey Owen has launched a new candle-making business, La Luce Candle Co.
The website went live on Monday November 8, and Ms Owen was overwhelmed with the response she received.
"I was expecting a couple [of orders], my mum and my family maybe," Ms Owen said.
"I was actually shocked a bit ... a lot of people even from Queensland ordered and I had a lady from Melbourne order. A few people have already put in Christmas orders, too."
Working full-time as a paralegal while studying law, Ms Owen has been burning the candle at both ends to get her small business up and running.
After months of testing different scents, moulds and waxes, and now that she has graduated, it was the perfect time to launch.
Ms Owen said there was much more to making candles than she initially realised but she's enjoying it.
"There's a bit to it," she said.
"There's a thousand different types of waxes ... you have to add the fragrance in at a certain temperature, you can't pour until it's a certain temperature ... so you've got to constantly monitor it.
"I also did a bit of market research and looked at other candle stores to see what they sold the most of or what people thought were popular."
La Luce Candle Co. has a number of scents and ranges, including a men's rage, with the aim to provide something for everyone.
Ms Owen hopes to eventually branch out into the local market scene and look at adding melts and diffusers to her range.
"I'd like to get into the market side of things, I think I'd sell a bit more than on the website because people can actually smell the candles," she said.
For now though, Ms Owen plans to just get through Christmas and is hoping the orders keep trickling in.
