Compareo, which commenced in term one of this year, has seen a dedicated group of individuals attend BMEC every Tuesday during school terms to grow their skills as performers, with a key focus on music and human movement.
The program has been led by trained professional dancer Catherine McNamara throughout much of the year, and popular local music duo Smith & Jones [Abby Smith and Sophie Jones] have facilitated the music component of the program.
BMEC creative producer Kylie Shead said the program has proven an exemplary success for young adults who have long desired an avenue to explore their interest in performing arts.
"They've been exposed to drama, physical theatre and music throughout the year, and the program has proven really beneficial as there aren't a lot of opportunities for young adults with a disability fresh out of school to be social and explore their creative side," Ms Shead said.
"This year has been a bit of a trial to see how it would go, and these young people have all become good friends, have really connected with Catherine, Abby and Sophie, and we're hoping to grow the program in 2022."
Cassandra Jones, who's daughter Rebecca takes part in the program, said Compareo has helped enhance Rebecca's social skills and forge new friendships.
"Rebecca has been going every week and her confidence as a performer has grown every single session," Ms Jones said.
"The people who run it are lovely and supportive, and would highly recommend it to anyone with a disabled young adult who has plenty of creative energy to burn."
Ms Shead said a long-term goal of the program is to build a professional ensemble working together within the realm of performing arts.
"We're probably another year off yet, but we'd really like to see this become an avenue for young adults with a disability to work towards regular live shows," she said.
"The program will recommence at the start of term one in 2022, and we are confident this initiative will grow."
Weekly classes cost $33 per class and run on Tuesdays during school terms. For more information, visit www.bmec.com.au.
