Panorama took a 1-0 lead to the break and scored a second in the second half, before Hayley Cheeney received her marching orders after being booked for a second time.
CSU responded within minutes of the sending off and made it a nervous finish for Panorama but they held on to win 2-1.
Panorama coach Brent Huie said it was an emotional day for the club.
“There’s only been first grade ladies at this club for two years now, so to get the win is bloody beautiful,” he said.
“It’s an emotional day.
“I feel for the Vixens. They’ve been the best team for the past four years. Cruel game sometimes but better them than us.”
- PANORAMA SQUAD ON THE DAY: Hayley Cheney, Emily Cochrane, Madison Gallegos, Micaela Gillespie, Kate Holden, Brooke Inwood, Rebecca Inwood, Naomi Keith, Lisa Matthew, Anna McHugh, Courtney Hayter, Kelsey Nancarrow, Phoebe Rhodes, Shania Morgan. COACH: Brent Huie
Panorama’s Hayley Cheney, who scored two goals in the preliminary final against Eglinton the previous Sunday, opened the scoring on the half-hour mark to give her side the 1-0 lead.
Cheney received a yellow card in the opening periods of the second half, as CSU looked to find an equaliser.
It never came, as Lisa Matthew doubled Panorama’s lead in the 75th minute.
But just when things were looking comfortable for the Panorama, Cheney, who was playing in the midfield, received a second yellow card and was off.
CSU’s Julia Elks scored minutes later to pull the score back to 2-1, setting up a thrilling last 10 minutes.
Yet the Vixens couldn’t find an equaliser, bringing an end to CSU’s four year dominance in women’s Premier League.
Huie said Cheney was unlucky to get sent off.
“I was going to throw her on at left back and she said, ‘Don’t throw me on at left back, I’m on a yellow card.’ So I threw her on in the midfield and five minutes later, off she goes,” she said.
“I thought she was a bit unlucky.
“It was a bad challenge, it was a foul and if you give the referees a reason to send you off, you probably deserve to be sent off.
“But I thought it was pretty soft.”
