MOTORISTS travelling east and west of Bathurst have been warned to beware of black ice this evening as freezing conditions descend on the region.

The Roads and Maritime Service's Live Traffic website is reporting alpine conditions with snow and ice near Fitzgeralds Mount on the Mid Western Highway between Bathurst and Blayney, and also near Mount Lambie on the Great Western Highway between Bathurst and Lithgow.

There are also warnings in place along the O'Connell Road at O'Connell, near Guyong on the Mitchell Highway and Duckmaloi Road between Oberon and Hampton.
Motorists are warned to reduce their speed and exercise caution.
"Snow and black ice create additional road hazards and motorists should reduce speed, limit braking, use daytime driving lights and keep an increased distance between cars in front," the website advises.
6.30AM: Forecast snow and ice across a wide area of NSW today has prompted a warning for motorists to prepare for changed traffic conditions and to take extra care on the roads..
Bathurst is expected to reach a top of just eight degrees today with snow possible above 900 metres.
There is unlikely to be any snow in the centre of Bathurst but areas of high ground to the north, south, east and west of the city are expected to get falls, creating a ring of ice around the city.
Snow is expected for areas above 900 metres on the Snowy Mountains and South West slopes, as well as the Central and Northern Tablelands.
A spokesperson for NSW Roads and Maritime Service said areas around Jindabyne, Adaminaby, Cooma, Batlow, Orange, Bathurst, Lithgow, Oberon, Blayney, Walcha, Armidale, Guyra and the Blue Mountains were most likely to be impacted by the statewide cold snap.

"Roads and Maritime Services will endeavour to maintain access along all major corridors within affected areas, including through salt spreading at key locations and using snow clearing equipment where necessary," the spokesperson said.
"Information will be provided to motorists on electronic signs, including real-time traffic information.
"Motorists are advised to check the road conditions before travelling, take additional caution and drive to conditions.
"Snow and black ice create additional road hazards and motorists should reduce speed, limit braking, use daytime driving lights and keep an increased distance between cars in front."
