While the star Bathurst triathlete would have liked to do better than her sixth placing in Devonport, she was the third best performed of the Australian contingent and not that far off a podium - 35 seconds.
Heading the the race, Moana-Veale knew she would face stiff opposition but felt her preparation put her in good stead.
"It's always hard to know what to expect for the first race of the season," the 27-year-old told Triathlon Australia.
"It'll be a great opportunity to go out and see where I'm at early season on a tough course with a strong field.
"We have prepared similar to previous years as it's worked well in the past and things seems to be tracking along well, so hoping for a good result."
Moana-Veale was the sixth out of the water with a nine minutes, 41 seconds split, while her cycle leg (34:36) was the 12th fastest split.
It was in the run that she shone with a 17:14 effort. Only eventual runner-up Andrea Hewitt (16:30) went quicker.
"Not the result we came for, but a lot of positive to take away from the first ITU race of the season," Moana-Veale said.
"Next up Mooloolaba World Cup race which is shaping up to be a spicy field."
The race at Mooloolaba is on March 14, with Moana-Veale one of 10 Australians entered in the elite women's event.
