The project has commenced with the rejuvenation of the old tennis courts into multipurpose facilities with additional support for basketball, netball and handball.
Bathurst mayor Bobby Bourke said the transformation of the town square will provide a fresh new landmark for the Perthville community.
"We've started a project that has been long overdue, and the court construction is on track for an early April opening," Cr Bourke said.
"I can see Perthville Public School students benefiting from the new courts, as the facilities are a welcome expansion to what they have in their school grounds."
The multipurpose courts are stage one of a $544,118 project funded by Bathurst Regional Council and the state government, which will also include a fitness station, toilet amenities, picnic facilities and a nature play area.
Cr Bourke said the Village Square, once complete, will expand Perthville's recreational capabilities.
"Perthville residents shouldn't have to go to Bathurst all the time for recreational purpose, so the redeveloped Village Square will allow the community greater ease of access," he said.
"Council is also considering redeveloping the old church next to the Community Hall into an attraction for visitors, such as a cafe."
Bathurst Regional Council has contributed $250,000 towards the project, while the remaining $294,118 came from the state government's Stronger Country Communities fund.
State member for Bathurst Paul Toole said the sports courts were identified as an important component of a larger proposed recreational development in the village.
"The local community, through a consultation process, identified the need to include an active zone within the Perthville Village Square concept design," Mr Toole said.
"The Village Square previously consisted of open space with two tennis/basketball courts in poor condition located on the southern side of the site."
Stage two is set to commence in the near future.
