AMANDA Turnbull returned to Bathurst Paceway on Wednesday night with hope Rainieri would be a much improved horse after a tough first up run three weeks earlier.

Thanks to an ideal sit behind the leader in the Ted Clifford Memorial (1,730 metres), Rainieri ($2.40 favourite) managed to fulfil that potential with a well-timed run to the winning post, seeing off a gallant Cobbity Chic ($10, Bernie Hewitt).
Rainieri battled hard for a fourth placing in his latest run prior to Wednesday night and Turnbull had confidence he'd come back better.
"That was his sort of race. It worked out perfectly for him, and he really needed to win that one," she said.
"He had a break and came back but he was a little bit flat in his first up run so he just needed to have another couple of weeks. That worked out good for him because he went really good tonight."
"Back then we couldn't give them two trials, only the one, so it was almost like a second trial for him and it ended up being a bit of a gut buster for him. He found that hard, and it flattened him a little bit.
"His work over the last couple of weeks has been a lot better so we thought we'd race him again."
Rainieri got away well from gate five but it was the horse to his outside, Gabbys Sportstar, who put in the big strides early to reach the lead.
Turnbull was more than happy to hand up control of the race and take the sit behind the David McKenzie-driven leader.
Gabbys Sportstar had a three length break off the front of the field but that was reined in as the field received the bell.
Im All Courage headed up the outside line after driver Amy Rees made a three wide move, hoping to put the mare in position to take a second straight victory.
Bernie Hewitt sensed his move from the back on Cobbity Chic would have to come early.
He brought his runner up from the rear of the field before the field had raced by the 800m post but didn't settle his mare down once she reached the death seat.
Cobbity Chic looked to put the squeeze on the favourite by racing past Gabbys Sportstar on the turn for home.
However, Rainieri looked composed behind Gabbys Sportstar, who was being worked hard by McKenzie with 400m to run.
Im All Courage drifted back and that presented Turnbull with the chance to peel out wide and avoid rolling the dice with the sprint lane.
Cobbity Chic raced on well for a horse who had been working tirelessly for almost a full kilometre but against a favourite with energy to spare it was always going to be a challenge.
Rainieri slowly pulled away from Hewitt's runner in the run for the winning post to win by 2.6 metres.
