It seems a lot of people who are in support of the go-kart track keep missing the essential point that the problem many have with the proposed go-kart track is simply where they want to put it, not having one per se.
I personally don't have a problem with a go-kart track being built in the Bathurst area, but just don't build it on top of Mount Panorama.
- Letter | My life on the Mount ... and why its park must be protected
- Letter | We need to listen to this personal perspective
- Letter | Kart track on Mount will rev up this city's economy
- Council votes to stand by original decision on go-kart track site
- Bathurst Kart Club's full statement on the go-kart track site
I actually doubt that the "hopes and wishes of our city's youth" are all built around us having a go-kart track on top of Mount Panorama/Wahluu, or even having one at all.
The track being proposed will be for members only, to which everyone who wants to join will I'm sure be welcome, but you will need to buy a go-kart and then a trailer in which to move it around in as well as helmet and protective racing gear, all of which will add up to many thousands of dollars, so it will be fairly limited as to who will be able to afford it - it won't be open to the public; a "local space to socialise, enjoy each others' company and come together to spend time".
The estimated $4.5 million to be spent building this private track, mostly from government grants (i.e. taxpayers), could fund many more "leisure activities" to meet the needs of the city's youth.
