Kangaroo is the debut play from local playwright Miranda Gott, and will be directed by former Bathurst creative Becky Russell, with a diverse three-person cast in Madelaine Osborn, Geraldine Brown and Duncan Wass.
Ms Gott said Kangaroo is heavily inspired by the contrasting nature of city and country living, where life and death seems so much closer where deceased wildlife is concerned.
"There's a character who is really confronted by seeing regular death on the road: and from a human perspective, the loss of someone in a community like Bathurst generally has a deeper impact, as while you may not have known them yourself, someone else does," she said.
"I also studied ecology and used to be a wildlife biologist, so that experience has directly inspired another character who works at a sewage facility and witnesses disposability first hand."
Kangaroo was originally meant to debut during BMEC's 2020 season, but was delayed due to COVID-19.
Ms Gott said its been extraordinary seeing her creation brought to life on stage, and is glad Kangaroo will place the spotlight on a stellar [mostly] local cast and crew.
"I hope Kangaroo leaves audiences with a lasting feeling days later, whether it be a particular character, scene or the entire play," she said.
"Theatre is best when it gets audiences thinking, and I would like to think this is the perfect play for people with a fascination for existentialism."
The play is set for further performances in Cowra [August] and Penrith [depending on the COVID-19 situation].
Kangaroo has been produced by BMEC's Local Stages, with support from Q Theatre, Lingua Franca, Arts OutWest and Martha and Ben Gelin.
The play will run this Friday [8pm] and Saturday [2pm and 8pm]. For tickets, visit www.bmec.com.au.
