The club had approached council with a request for a $25,000 grant to assist with its new boat shed project at Chifley Dam and the purchase of new boats and other essential equipment to replace the club's ageing fleet.
Due to late notice, council was unable to consider the club's request in its Section 356 donations program, which is allocated before the start of each financial year.
The request came to last Wednesday's council meeting, with staff recommending just a $2000 donation, to be funded from the residual $20,000 in Section 356.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Staff said the $2000 would cover the estimated development application fees the club would have to pay for its boat shed project.
Councillors were told they could resolve to provide a donation of up to $20,000, but were advised not to, as it would exhaust the remaining Section 356 funds, leaving nothing for other funding requests that could come in over the next 10 months.
Cr Jacqui Rudge proposed a $5000 donation, which narrowly passed with the votes of herself and councillors Bobby Bourke, Jess Jennings, John Fry and Ian North.
"Even though the rowing club were late getting in their application, I think they've done everything that's been asked of them," Cr Rudge said. "... If they actually do get some money through the Regional Sports Facility Fund, this could help them with some of their fees through council and to renew some of their equipment."
